bodycity - a visual arts project in three parts

Artists announced for PROJECT bodycity

Beginning in November 2007 with VIDEO APARTMENT, a curated programme of video works by 30 artists and bodytalkcity, a one day event bringing together a range of speakers from Europe and beyond to explore the complex ideas surrounding the human body in relation to the cities in which we live today. How might our material, political and social environments alter perceptions, our existential experience, and our sense of being in the world. PROJECT bodycity sees the realisation of new works by 8 invited artists in September 2008 as temporary interventions throughout the Docklands area of Dublin, Ireland.

You Are The MeasureDocklands, East of Dublin City, built on industrial wastelands to the north and south of the River Liffey - until recently presented an anti-romantic mise-en-scene of empty warehouses, railway depots, and foundries, and vacant streets. Rapidly transformed, today Docklands presents itself as a new city - a modernist grid plan - a place to live and to work, to belong or not belong. Predominantly new development, it is built on a past that is barely visually present, in a place that seems to represent a model future. Its transient community of the "upwardly mobile' live alongside the last remaining and long settled residents whose families before them would have worked in the port and its related industries.

Exploring the idea of body as city, city as body within a newly planned city raises questions from many perspectives, around the cities we are building today and their effect on our lives. This project will focus on how we might present challenging and unexpected interventions, engaging with artists and others that will feed into the thinking of the city/ body, body/ city.

Commissioned by the Dublin Docklands Development Authority, bodycity is curated by Nigel Rolfe, the prominent performance artist, Cliodhna Shaffrey, an independent curator, and Shelagh Morris as project curator-administrator.
